Set Over Set

Probably the best or worst flop you can get vs. one opponent is set over set.  You are drawing to one out if you are on the bottom end barring random straight or flush bad beats.  This happened to me twice yesterday with the same hands with me fortunately on the top.  What the heck are the odds on that?  The first was in a 3/6 limit game.  I was on the waiting list for both the 4/8 and 3/300 games.  Like most limit games was stuck quickly but recovered some in a big pot with j/j vs.  K/K and A/A.  Capped preflop I hit a jack on the flop and won a nice pot.  Later, playing K/K I created a big pot vs. a good, tight player (he is a dealer at this casino) when he raised preflop.  Flop was K/8/x and we capped it.  He was playing pocket 8's. Nice pot.

Moved to 1/3/300 game and had the same situation.  Pocket 8's raised, I re-raised with kings.  Flop K/8/x .  This time we got it all in and I doubled up.  Strangely enough had pocket kings twice after that, taking one raised pot down preflop, losing the other on an ace high flush board. Overall a good but not spectacular day winning $127 in about 3 hours of play.

I love flopping sets, but having said that I tend to have the worst luck a lot of the time. Just last Saturday I flopped a set of 10s against Hal's QQ and he got runner-runner for a straight to knock me out of the tournament. Cheese and rice!

Nonetheless, give me a set every time. I think the odds are much better that they will hold up against most other hands. I will never forgot one time playing the cash game when I flopped 13 (yes you heard that right) sets and they all held up except one. That was a great night.

This has nothing to do with sets - just wanted to share what happened to me in the cash game Saturday. I had AA (about middle position) and raised to $12. Nicole (in the cut-off) raised to $32. Two or three other idiots called $32 before it got back to me when I made it $52 and we were off to the races.

The flop was Q-8-3 ALL SPADES. Damn. I did NOT have the ace of spades, but I bet $20 anyway when it was checked to me. Nicole only called. All the other people called.

The turn was another spade. I was done. I checked. Nicole bet $20. All the other players continue to call (there's 4 of them I think). I accidentally flip my aces over when folding and the guy across the way says "What? You're folding aces?" I point to the board (which has 4 spades) and say, "Duh. I'm not an idiot."

Sometimes I hate poker. I would have been thrilled to chop that pot with her.

Dewey, comment on your comment. And this is why the 2/20 spread game sucks. I have been playing either 1/3 no limit or 1/3/300 spread here. You will never get multi way action like that with big hands. Her re-raise with callers would quickly elicit an all-in and you would be heads up. You might still get your aces cracked but hey, that's poker. All low limit "limit" games are bingo most of the time.

Re:aces cracked was eliminated from a tournament this week with aces vs. queens. I had Ah/As, he had black queens. Three clubs on flop. Guess the suit of the river card? Sometimes I hate this game.

You and me both!! It's definitely a love-hate relationship. I had AA against Jimmer one time and he went all-in with QQ and naturally I called. Queen on the flop. BLAH!
